Real Oviedo returns to the big Spanish youth football tournament 25 years later. The blue team will compete in the 33rd edition of LALIGA FC Futures in Vila-real. The excitement is tremendous, says Antonio Rivas, director of Real Oviedo's youth academy. The former player and coach accompanies the team and their technical staff. Also in Vila-real are the team's recruitment manager, Bernardo Entrialgo, and the coordination and methodology manager, Javier Benavides. The kids are facing this with tremendous excitement, it's a spectacular tournament that we've been unable to dispute for a long time. They're living it with a lot of emotion. The journey was tough, at night and by bus, but that doesn't matter to them, concludes Rivas. Real Oviedo's U-12 team is trained by Víctor Martínez, Turu, who has been in charge of the category for three consecutive seasons. The blue team arrives at the tournament after being crowned champions of Asturias, beating Quirín in the league. The history of Real Oviedo in the most important youth tournament in Spain was short but intense. The championship was inaugurated in 1992 and in its first two editions, the autonomous selections competed. In 1994, the First Division clubs entered the scene and, precisely, Sporting won the first edition. The blue academy participated from 1994 to 2001, when Real Oviedo de Antic descended to Second Division after losing in Mallorca. Eight editions and two finals played by the carbayones, none of them won. And in both finals, Oviedo was close to winning. In the 1998 final, the coach was José Vicente and the team led by Michu, with Jaime Álvarez, Jairo or Nacho Matador, among others, was 0-2 down against Athletic, but Lezama remounted and won the title 4-2. In the 2001 final, the last participation by Oviedo, Kiko Arias coached a team with Lex Arias, Tato Mier or Abilio, among others. Final against Real Zaragoza, 0-1 for the carbayones and a bad remontada under the baton of Ander Herrera. 3-1 and it's over.
