Real Oviedo Vetusta kicked off their 2026-27 season with a 0-0 draw against Real Avilés Industrial at El Requexón. The Carbayones, who narrowly missed promotion last season in Segunda RFEF, showed flashes of their potential but failed to convert against a rival making their competitive debut under new manager Yago Iglesias.
The match, played at the Avilés side’s home ground, saw a see-saw battle. The all-blue team, fielding a starting XI packed with new faces, began with control of the game but lacked the precision needed to break the deadlock. Brais Abelenda stood out as one of the key attacking threats, linking up with Santamaría and Natalio in a system that Iglesias adjusted on the fly between a 4-4-1-1 and a 4-2-3-1.
A season opener of highs and lows for the Carbayones
Real Oviedo Vetusta, who finished last season in Segunda RFEF just one step away from promotion, showed early intent to impose their style. Yet the lack of familiarity among the new signings held them back. The team, managed by Marco Suárez, created at least one clear chance through Santamaría, who exploited space on the counter but saw his shot diverted by the visiting goalkeeper.
From the 30th minute onward, Vetusta took charge and stepped up the pressure. Real Avilés Industrial, in full pre-season mode with 11 new players, adopted a more conservative approach but still generated quick transitions thanks to the pace of Cayarga and Montes on the wings. The match stayed balanced until the final whistle, ending goalless but with positive vibes for both sides in their league debut.
Avilés fans pack El Requexón
The match drew a strong away following from Real Avilés, who traveled to Oviedo to back their team in their first official game of the season. The atmosphere inside El Requexón was electric, especially in the opening minutes when Avilés pressed hard. The home side’s captain nearly opened the scoring in the 15th minute, but his effort was turned away by Vetusta goalkeeper Samu.
Real Oviedo Vetusta, who ended last season with 26 goals scored and 60 conceded (a -34 goal difference), now begin a new campaign in Primera RFEF with sights set on regaining the form shown in previous years. The team finished 20th in LaLiga last season with 29 points and a run of five straight defeats at the end of the campaign, and now aim to settle into Spain’s third tier with confidence.
