What has happened?
Real Oviedo has terminated the contract of youth forward Pelayo García, born in Avilés in 2005, after nine years in the lower categories. The decision was announced on July 8, 2026, stating that the player will continue his career with the Ceuta reserve team. García had been loaned to Coruxo in the second half of the previous season, where he played 13 matches without much impact.
Why did the club take this step?
The blue club said it sees no place for García in Vetusta, its reserve side. Despite the confidence shown when he renewed his contract until 2029 in February 2025, a serious knee injury suffered in the summer of 2023 has hampered his development. Since then he has struggled with physical issues, although he managed four goals in 14 games during Vetusta’s 2024/25 campaign.
What does this mean for the player’s future?
With the termination, Pelayo García joins the Ceuta reserve squad, hoping to regain form and prove his worth. In his farewell letter, the youngster thanked Real Oviedo for years of learning and pledged that the badge will always be in his heart. His departure frees a spot in Vetusta that the club can fill with another emerging talent.
How is the club faring right now?
As of today, Real Oviedo sits at the bottom of La Liga, 20th with 29 points after 38 games (6 wins, 11 draws, 21 losses) and a recent run of LLLDL. The team has scored 26 goals and conceded 60, a -34 goal difference, and trails the leaders Barcelona by 65 points. These figures highlight the challenging situation, prompting the club to seek reinforcements and improve results in the latter half of the season.
What’s next for Vetusta?
Vetusta still fields a youthful squad with goalkeepers like Mate Sauri (2006) and Samuel Franganillo (2003), defenders such as Adri Lopes (2005) and Diego Espinosa (2004), and forwards like Jaime Coballes (2006). García’s exit allows coach Roberto Aguirre to reassess attacking options and give minutes to other prospects. The goal remains to develop players capable of contributing to the first team in the future.
