Carlos Fernández is now a Real Oviedo player: Calero completes the forward line
Real Oviedo have completed the signing of Carlos Fernández, a Sevilla-born striker from Real Sociedad, to strengthen their attack ahead of the new LaLiga season. The Asturian club, currently 20th with 29 points and a recent five-game winless run (LLLDL), now has their offensive overhaul in place.
What happened with Carlos Fernández's arrival?
The Real Oviedo sporting staff had been working for weeks on bringing in a forward who fit Julián Calero's project. The manager had specifically requested a player like Fernández, someone who can play with their back to goal, link up well and provide intensity off the ball. After talks with Real Sociedad -who had no plans for the player-, both sides finalized the deal this Tuesday.
The Sevilla native arrives at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium with 26 goals scored this season and after a standout campaign at Mirandés, where he played 35 matches, logged over 2,600 minutes and scored 16 goals with two assists. His performances in Anduva allowed him to rediscover the scoring instinct that defined earlier stages of his career, such as his time at Granada, where he netted eleven goals in a single season.
Why does this signing matter for Real Oviedo?
Fernández arrives with top-flight experience and a recent injury history that now appears behind him. Calero believes the striker can add solidity to an attack that has been completely rebuilt, alongside Chris Ramos and Alexandru Isfan, who already have their spots secured. Joaquín Delgado and Víctor Mingo, meanwhile, will battle for a place during pre-season.
The Oviedo side, which currently has a -34 goal difference this season and sits 65 points behind league leaders Barcelona, needs reinforcements like Fernández to improve their fortunes in a demanding division. His ability to pin back defenders and link with teammates fits the style of play Calero is building.
What comes next for Real Oviedo?
With the forward line now shaped, the Asturian club turns to the final pre-season details. Fernández will join the squad for the build-up to the LaLiga opener, where Oviedo will aim to avoid another relegation battle. The manager already has his preferred attacking lineup, but a couple of spots elsewhere on the pitch remain up for grabs.
